Calvert Kielder — Accessible Holidays in Kielder Forest

Calvert Kielder is a uniquely inclusive holiday, outdoor activity and respite centre on a 40-acre woodland site in Northumberland’s Kielder Water & Forest Park. The charity builds accessibility into everything it does — from its nineteen self-catered lodges to the world’s only fully wheelchair-accessible AvatarOne™ ZipCoaster — and it needed a website that did the same.

TWDA designed and built the new site from the ground up, working closely with the Calvert Kielder team and its trustees. The result is a calm, confident and accessible website that makes it easy for families, respite guests, schools, groups and supporters to find what they need and book.

“Accessibility isn’t an add-on at Calvert Kielder, so it couldn’t be an add-on on their website either. Every decision, from the type sizes to the booking journey, started there.”

Built Around Accessibility — and Bookings

The site brings everything Calvert Kielder offers into one clear structure: self-catered lodges and bed and breakfast rooms, award-winning respite care breaks, outdoor activities, school and group residentials, corporate away days and the charity’s fundraising.

Accessibility shaped the design from the start — clear, high-contrast headings, generous text sizes, simple navigation and an accessibility toolbar on every page, with each accommodation and activity page carrying its own access information.

We integrated GemaPark so guests can search availability and book online, with a live availability calendar on each of the nineteen individual lodge pages. During the build we also refined the look with the charity’s trustees — a more elegant serif typeface, a warm off-white palette and a solid navy navigation — so the photography of Kielder Forest can do the talking.

A news and stories section, a fundraising hub covering donations, the lottery, appeals and gifts in wills, and a jobs and volunteering area give the charity room to keep growing the site itself.
