Charity website design case study - The Northern Ladies Annuity Society (NLAS)

The Northern Ladies Annuity Society (NLAS) is a remarkable organisation with a legacy of care stretching back to 1868. As a registered charity, their mission is deeply focused and vital: providing support and assistance to single, widowed, or divorced women over the age of 60 who are living on a low income and have a connection to the North East of England.

NLAS.org: The Challenge

For an organisation built on personal connection and trust, their digital presence needed to be more than just a website—it needed to be a welcoming and safe space. The primary challenge was to create an online platform that was highly accessible and reassuring for its specific audience, many of whom may not be digital natives. The website had to:

  • Inspire Trust: Immediately convey the society’s long-standing, legitimate, and caring nature.

  • Be Highly Accessible: Ensure text was easy to read and navigation was simple for users who may have visual impairments or be less confident with technology.

  • Provide Clear Information: Make it effortless for members and potential applicants to find the information they need without confusion or stress.

  • Feel Personal and Human: Reflect the warm, personal approach of the society’s friendly staff, Susan and Maria.

Our goal was to translate the society’s compassionate, human-centric mission into a digital format. We focused on empathy, clarity, and security.

  • Accessible-First Design: We designed the website with a clear, high-contrast colour scheme and large, legible fonts. The navigation is simple and logical, ensuring users can find what they need without getting lost.

  • Trust and Safety as a Priority: The website is built on a secure (HTTPS) platform to protect user privacy. We prominently displayed the society’s registered charity number and long history to immediately establish its credibility.

  • Warm and Personal Tone: The language used throughout the site is intentionally simple, warm, and welcoming. We made sure to feature the names of the staff, Susan and Maria, on the contact page to make the society feel approachable and human.

  • Streamlined Content: We worked with NLAS to present their information clearly and concisely. The process for getting in touch or seeking assistance is straightforward, removing any potential digital barriers for members.

The Results & Impact

The new website now serves as a true digital extension of the Northern Ladies Annuity Society’s mission.

  • Enhanced Member Confidence: Members can now access information in a safe, secure, and easy-to-use online environment.

  • Improved Accessibility: The clear design ensures that the society’s vital services are accessible to all its members, regardless of their technical confidence.

  • Reinforced Trust: The professional and secure website reinforces the society’s 150+ year legacy of trust and reliability, assuring members they are in safe hands.

Lessons Learned

“This project also reminded us that, at times, less is more. Initially, we designed a much larger site with lots of pages and lots of detailed information.

We had focused more on pleasing the client and showing off our skills and, in doing so, lost touch with the primary audience. We had lost sight of the simple aim of the website and how it would be perceived by the clients in question.

We removed the unnecessary pages and focused on easy, clear information and simple calls to action.

Every day is a learning day!”

NLAS-case study
It was essential for us that our website felt as welcoming and supportive as we are in person. TWDA listened carefully and created a site that is perfect for the ladies we help. It's clear, easy to navigate, and gives our members confidence.
