When a business is as steeped in local history as The Boatside Inn, a digital overhaul requires more than just technical skill; it requires a deep respect for the brand’s heritage. Located in the heart of Northumberland, near the confluence of the North and South Tyne, The Boatside Inn is a cornerstone of the Warden community. Our mission at TWDA was to translate that physical warmth and reliability into a digital experience that performs as well for the business as it does for the guest.
The journey began with the logo. In the hospitality sector, a logo is the first point of contact—a visual handshake. The previous branding had served its purpose, but it lacked the versatility required for modern digital platforms. Our objective was to create a visual identity that felt established and sturdy, yet clean and contemporary.
We moved away from overly literal interpretations, opting instead for a refined, minimalist aesthetic. The new typography was selected for its balance of traditional serif weight and modern clarity, ensuring legibility whether printed on a menu or viewed on a smartphone. The colour palette was a critical choice; we selected deep, forest greens and accented them with muted creams to reflect the lush Northumberland landscape and the inn’s proximity to nature.
This design process wasn’t merely about aesthetics. By creating a cohesive brand system, we ensure that The Boatside Inn presents a professional and unified front. This consistency builds immediate credibility with potential visitors, signalling that the quality of the digital experience reflects the quality of the service they will receive upon arrival.
” The challenge with a project like The Boatside Inn Warden is capturing the ‘soul’ of a physical space and translating it into pixels. We didn’t want to just build a functional website; we wanted to recreate the feeling of walking into the pub on a cold afternoon. By balancing a clean, modern interface with rich, heritage-inspired branding, we’ve given the Inn a digital presence that feels every bit as welcoming as the bar itself. It’s about more than just aesthetics—it’s about building a platform that earns the visitor’s trust before they even step through the door.”
With the brand identity solidified, we turned our attention to the website. A modern pub and inn website must do more than just display an address; it must act as a seamless booking engine, an interactive menu, and a gallery of the guest experience.
In the hospitality industry, a significant percentage of traffic arrives via mobile devices—often from travellers searching for a meal or a bed while on the road. We built the new site with a mobile-first architecture. This ensures that the navigation is intuitive, the buttons are “thumb-friendly,” and the load times are near-instantaneous. By reducing friction in the user journey, we naturally increase the likelihood of a table booking or a room reservation.
To convey the “Experience” of staying at The Boatside Inn, we integrated high-resolution, professional photography throughout the site. Large, hero images of the cosy bar area, the meticulously prepared local dishes, and the comfortable guest rooms allow the user to mentally “check-in” before they have even booked. We utilised lazy-loading technology to ensure these high-quality visuals do not compromise the site’s speed or performance.
Beyond the surface, the site’s architecture was designed to be easily “readable” by search engines. We structured the content into clear, logical silos: Dining, Accommodation, and The Pub. This helps visitors find exactly what they need within two clicks, while also allowing us to naturally integrate location-based information that grounds the business in its Northumberland context.
The collaboration between TWDA and The Boatside Inn has resulted in a digital platform that is as robust as it is beautiful. By focusing on the user’s needs and the brand’s unique story, we have created a site that doesn’t just look better—it works harder.
For TWDA, this project is a testament to our belief that great design is a business investment. By combining creative vision with technical rigour, we have provided The Boatside Inn with the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly digital marketplace.
