Updating Your WooCommerce Site: A Cautious Approach Recommended Amidst Recent Fixes

As of May 30, 2025, while recent critical issues in WooCommerce core have reportedly been addressed, exercising caution and following best practices remains crucial when updating your WooCommerce site alongside WordPress core and other plugins.

Earlier in May, some WooCommerce sites experienced significant issues, dubbed the “May Meltdown,” causing fatal errors, particularly for sites using block themes. WooCommerce has since released updates, with WooCommerce 9.8.5 (released May 12, 2025) containing fixes for these problems, specifically related to block pattern data. This version also introduced a new React-based Payments Settings page as the default. The next major release, WooCommerce 9.9, is anticipated around June 2, 2025.

WordPress core saw its latest major update, WordPress 6.8, released on April 15, 2025. No widespread critical issues directly attributed to this core version have been reported recently. However, the WordPress ecosystem continues to see a steady stream of vulnerability reports for various third-party plugins and themes. Notably, an unpatched critical vulnerability in the “TI WooCommerce Wishlist” plugin was disclosed on May 27, 2025. This highlights the ongoing need for vigilance regarding all components of your site.

Key Considerations Before Updating:

Recent Fixes: While WooCommerce core appears to have stabilised after the May issues, ensure you are updating to version 9.8.5 or newer if you were affected or are concerned.
Plugin and Theme Compatibility: This remains the most significant factor.
- Verify that your active theme and all plugins, especially those crucial for your store’s functionality (payment gateways, shipping integrations, etc.), are compatible with the latest versions of WooCommerce and WordPress.
